At the Trading Standards Conference in Manchester in June 2004 pupils from the Mile End Primary School were successful in a nationwide competition. Entrants in the competition, to design a safe toy, were divided in to three age groups 9-11, 12-14, and 15-17 years. The overall winner was judged to be a pupil from Mile End Primary School who won the 9-11 year age group with another Mile End pupil second in the same age group. Further success followed in 2005 with 3 pupils from Mile End being commended for their entries. The Young Consumers Competition is run by the Trading Standards Institute and is aimed at testing the knowledge of 14-18 year olds on a wide range of consumer issues. The Final is held at the TSI Annual Conference. The 2006 final was held in London and the overall winning team Boroughmuir High School from Edinburgh, received a prize of £1000 for their school and the Young Consumers of the Year Trophy and medals. The semi finals were won by St Aloysius College from Glasgow and Allerton High School from West Yorkshire. The competition is separated out into 3 stages, from local finals to regional competitions, culminating in a fiercely fought national final, which this year will be held at the MICC in Manchester 26 - 28 June 2007.
