Lucky you, you’re over 18 and are responsible for your own actions. There are still a few facts you need to be aware of though.
Most retail premises in the KCAP areas will have one of these policies. What this means is anyone who looks younger than 25 will be asked to show ID. This can seem frustrating, particularly if you are a few years older than 18 but take it as a compliment and understand that the shop assistant is just doing his or her job. Always carry your ID and be prepared to show it.
Shop assistants can receive an £80 on the spot fine for selling to someone underage or they may be prosecuted and face a fine of up to £5000. This means they will have a criminal record.
Just remember a good proportion of those shop assistants are under 25 just like you and are probably working there to pay the bills or fund their studies. Still blame them for being careful now?
You will most likely see these signs in KCAP pubs and this means staff will be looking out for those who look 21 and younger. Why the differing ages from the retailers? Well most pubs, particularly those in town centres recognise that their usual clientele are young adults and a different crowd to those who buy alcohol from corner shops. The same rules apply and you should be ready to show your ID.
Do you have younger mates or siblings? If they ask you to buy alcohol for them don’t be tempted. This is called a proxy sale and you could get an £80 on the spot fine or face prosecution with a fine up to £5000.
