This fun, challenging, interactive competition complements the introduction of CITIZENSHIP into the English National curriculum. It tests knowledge of money, credit and finance, consumer law and affairs, food and health, safety and the environment and Europe and travel. In fact, it arms young people with the information to make the right decisions and become a powerful force for changing and shaping markets. The competition supports consumer education and encourages the exploration of the skills, attitudes, knowledge and understanding necessary to become an effective consumer, all prerequisites for active citizenship and full participation in society. Apart from the kudos the school receives from taking part, because the competition is supported by local businesses, the school will usually receive some form of learning resource if they win through to the Kent Heat.

These 6 teams then face a showdown final at County Hall, Maidstone in January, run along the lines of University Challenge. The winning team become Kent’s Young Consumers of the Year, winning excellent prizes. But the action does not stop there. With regional finals and a potential place at the National finals held during the Trading Standards Institute’s Annual Conference during July, there is much to play for.
