The keeping and movement of pigs is enforced by the Pigs (Records, Identification and Movement) Order 1995 as amended by the Pigs (Records, Identification and Movement) (Scotland) Amendment Order 2002 and the Disease Control (Interim Measures) (Scotland) Order 2002, as most recently amended by the Disease Control (Interim Measures) (Scotland) Amendment (No. 3) Order 2007.

Generally, no pigs may be moved off premises within 20 days of any animal moving onto the premises, or any other premises in the same sole occupancy group, except for pigs moved for slaughter, (there are some exemptions). The movement of pigs can only be made if the appropriate licence or declaration is in force.

The owner or person in charge of a pig must make and maintain a record showing certain details including the date of movement, identification mark and number of pigs. There are certain identification requirements necessary before pigs leave any premises.
