There are strict laws relating to the keeping of pigs as pets. If you intend to breed and sell them then different regulations apply. You must:
- register as a pig keeper with Defra who will issue you with a holding number and a herd number
- have a licence for any movement of pigs on or off your premises; this includes taking your pet pig for a walk outside your land
- keep records of such movements
Pigs are required to identified with an ear tag/tattoo/slap mark consisting of the Defra allocated herd mark or if under a year old a temporary mark. Pigs must not be feed any waste food; this includes table scraps and any food that has been in contact with meat.
