The Sheep and Goats (Identification and Traceability) (Scotland) Regulations 2006 and the Sheep and Goats (Identification and Traceability) (Scotland) (Amendment) Regulations 2007 require any new keeper of sheep or goats to register their holding within one month of being a keeper, with his/her local Scottish Government Rural Directorate (formerly SEERAD) divisional veterinary manager, who must also be notified, in writing, of any changes of existing holdings. You will not need to report movements if the land you are moving animals between is under your sole management and control, and is within 5 miles (8km) of your main site.

There is a legal definition of ‘main site’ and different requirements for movement recordings depending on the different holdings. All sheep and goat movements should be accompanied by a completed movement document (AML/1 which is in quadruplicate, with specific destinations for each of the four copies. There are also requirements for a holding register and inventory in specific circumstances.
