The Welfare of Animals (Transport) (Scotland) Regulations 2006 apply to anyone who transports cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry in connection with an economic activity, it does not, however, apply to the transport of animals to or from a veterinary practice or clinic under the advice of a veterinary surgeon. There are a number of principle requirements in respect of farmers transporting their own animals by their own means of transport for a distance of less than 50km (approx 31 miles), including ensuring the animals are fit for the journey, no injury or undue suffering is caused, there is sufficient floor area and height, and the animals are watered, fed and rested at particular intervals.
People transporting animals in any other circumstances must ensure they carry the appropriate documentation, that they do not carry injured, weak or diseased animals, and that appropriate bedding is provided for piglets, lambs and calves. A person transporting animals for over 65km must have a certifiicate of competence and the ‘transporter’ must be authorised.
