Notice to those who transport livestock by road

(for Scotland)

Enter your postcode in the field at the bottom of this page to see if your local authority trading standards department has the full leaflet version available on its website.

From 25 January 2007, anyone transporting animals on journeys of over 65 km (approximately 40 miles) as part of an economic activity must hold a valid transporter authorisation to do so. There are two types of authorisation, one for short journeys (over 65 km and under eight hours) and one for long journeys (over eight hours.)

Transporters must carry their authorisations with them on any journey when they are transporting animals. Applications for the authorisations can be made from either Defra, welfare in transport team animal health or a divisional veterinary manager. As from 5 January 2008 anyone who transports animals using road vehicles in connection with an economic activity must have received appropriate training and hold a certificate of competence. The leaflet provides guidance about how to obtain the training necessary to obtain a certificate of competency.
