Guidance on the disposal of animal by-products and carcasses

Regulations require that fallen farm animals (including stillborn animals) are collected and transported without undue delay to an approved premises for incineration, rendering, to technical plants or to authorised premises including for diagnostic, educational or research purposes, for taxidermy, knacker yards, zoos, hunt kennels and maggot farms. Burial or burning is not permitted.

Carcasses from cattle aged over 48 months must be tested for BSE. Animal by-products must be transported in covered leak proof containers/vehicles and be accompanied by a commercial document.
