The Welfare of Animals (Transport) (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) covers those who transport cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and horses in connection with an economic activity, and implements in Scotland Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005. There are principle requirements concerning the amount of space available to livestock, the fitness of the animals, the rest periods, and what to do if the animal falls ill or is injured during transport.

Generally, the maximum permitted journey time for livestock is eight hours, but this can be extended if certain provisions are met regarding bedding, feeding, individual compartments, and access to animals for inspection. There are strict definitions as to what constitutes a ‘journey'.
