Membership and approval logos, and claims of approval

(for all nations)

Enter your postcode in the field at the bottom of this page to see if your local authority trading standards department has the full leaflet version available on its website.

Logos denoting membership of or approval by an organisation may be legitimately used by businesses. Their misuse however, deliberate or otherwise, can result in a commercial advantage, enabling business to be acquired unfairly, and may constitute a breach of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPRs) which have replaced the Trade Descriptions Act 1968.

The CPRs specifically ban a trader from displaying any form of trust mark, quality mark or equivalent, if he is not authorised to do so. It is also a breach of the Regulations generally to provide false or deceptive information. The claim of membership to an organisation can be made either verbally or in writing.
