Do you sell at car boot sales?

(for England, Wales and Northern Ireland)

Enter your postcode in the field at the bottom of this page to see if your local authority trading standards department has the full leaflet version available on its website.

You may well be considered a trader if you sell goods that are not your personal property, attend boot sales regularly, employ someone to help with the sale, and/or sell similar goods at other venues generating a regular income. If you are a trader, there are obligations to display your trading name and address, ensure goods are safe, ensure goods are clearly priced, that any food is properly labelled and within date, descriptions are accurate, and that you do not restrict consumers' statutory rights.

If you are a private seller, you will be largely outside the controls of consumer law, but there are exceptions. Some local authorities may licence car boot sales as they do markets.
