Business guidance

The Trading Standards Institute provides online information for business guidance on two specific areas:

Distance Selling Regulations
Sale of Goods Act

Special notice: Distance Selling Regulations and Sales of Goods Act

The Trading Standards Institute has taken over over ownership of Business Education from the Office of Fair Trading, including the online Distance Selling Regulations and Sale of Goods Act.

On the  menu on the left you will find a list of subject areas with TSI summaries of business guidance on compliance with trading standards legislation.

These are on a range of topics from keeping animals to labelling of foods and selling fireworks.

Full guidance should be on your local trading standards website trading advice section as part of the customised services they provide. You can find your local trading standards service through the postcode search at the bottom of this page.

Local authorities help businesses by running Home Authority and/or Primary Authority schemes (see BRDO). They can advise on compliance with the law and dealing with other local authorities which may want to know about your business.

We regularly update these pages to reflect changes in legislation. If you feel that there are topics not covered please let us know. We are always looking to improve how the Institute and trading standards services help businesses to treat customers fairly and remain legal at all times.
