checklist for resolving complaints with a trader

(for all nations)

Enter your postcode in the field at the bottom of this page to see if your local authority trading standards department has the full leaflet version available on its website.

When you have a complaint with faulty goods you hope that the trader will resolve the issue quickly and efficiently for you. There are a number of steps you need to take to ensure this. Once you are aware of the fault stop using the item immediately and contact the trader. Always speak to someone in authority and make a note of their name and the action they agree to take. If the matter is not resolved you should contact the head office in writing.

Always keep copies of any letters, keeping proof of postage. You may need to include other paperwork such as receipts with your letter, always send a copy and keep the original safe. If the matter is still not resolved, you may need to seek legal advice and trading standards can be contacted for further advice.
