Have you seen an advert or been handed a leaflet or business card claiming that you can earn money from home or in your spare time? You need to establish if this is a legitimate business venture or a home-working scam. The most common type of advertisement concerns stuffing and addressing envelopes.
These envelope schemes actually work by lots of people sending off their stamped addressed envelopes on the promise of earning lots of money, but in reality the market becomes saturated with everyone doing the same thing and waiting for their commission. It is very unlikely you will earn a lot from these types of scheme.
Other schemes involve you assembling goods at home where you often have to buy expensive kits yourself, and then companies will reject goods saying they have not been assembled correctly.
There are steps you can take to try and ensure the company you are dealing with are legitimate, including only dealing with those displaying full company details (avoiding ones with just PO box numbers), checking if any fee you pay initially is refundable, reading through all paperwork, terms and conditions, etc properly, and checking whether you have to buy any materials first.
