ISO14001 CertificationIn September 2001, along with other units within the Brent Environment & Culture directorate, Brent and Harrow Trading Standards achieved registration to ISO14001 for our Environmental Management Systems. We have maintained this award at each of our annual surveillance visits since. As part of its commitment to the principles of ISO14001 and 'Continuous Environmental Improvement', Brent and Harrow Trading Standards has implemented a number of Environmental Improvement Programmes (EIP's), (formerly known as Environmental Management Programmes (EMP's)),to manage areas of our work which the Service has identified as having a significant environmental impact. The Environmental Improvement Programmes that we have/have had deal with the following issues: (1) Recycling of evidence due for destruction. Before this EMP was introduced, all evidence was destroyed at Edmonton Waste Incinerator and therefore contributed to the toxic emissions emanating from that facility. Since 2002, almost all spent evidence is sent for recycling through approved charities such as The Birth Defects Foundation and Metropolitan Police Convoy 2000. The total weight of evidence recycled last year was 3470 KG. (2) Encourage advice to business on Trading Standards legislation that has environmental implications. A concerted effort has been made to increase the amount of advice given to traders in the borough(s) in order to promote their compliance with different environmental legislation that Trading Standards enforce. A baseline survey of environmental advice and inspection undertaken during 2000-2001 has been carried out, with the result of setting higher targets for later years. Brent and Harrow Trading Standards are fortunate to accommodate many large national retailers' head office facilities in their area. By advising and assisting such companies on their environmental responsibilities, we hope to contribute positively to environmental issues on a national scale by influencing these businesses to be more conscious of their environmental responsibilities. (3) Monitoring compliance by business with the Packaging (essential requirements) Regulations 1998. This piece of legislation aims to control the amount of packaging which manufacturers and packers use to accompany their products. A project was conducted which resulted in advice being given to major national and multinational companies. This EMP is now completed. But general packaging advice to businesses is given as part of our routine work on an ongoing basis. (4) Monitoring compliance by businesses in the consortium area with The Passenger Car (Fuel Consumption & CO2 Emission) Regulations 2001 to ensure that the sales of any new cars are accompanied by the requisite emissions information. This piece of legislation requires retailers and manufacturers on new passenger motor vehicles to provide information to consumers at the point of sale on the Fuel Consumption & CO2 Emission levels of any new passenger vehicle. The labels displayed on cars must be in a certain format, as well as giving certain detail. Further information on these labels, can be found at: www.dft.gov.uk These management programmes will continue this year but as part of our continuous environmental review, other Significant Environmental Aspects may be identified and therefore new Environmental Improvement Programmes may also be considered and added if necessary. This web page is updated annually with the latest position. As at 11 August 2005, EIP5 and EIP6 are currently active, and all others are closed.
