Latest News Rogue Traders Targeted4.45PM Wed Oct 19 2011Crackdown on conmen A joint exercise with Sussex Police and other local enforcement agencies was carried out recently in the Brighton and Hove area to target Rogue Traders. They often target the elderly and most vulnerable, but now Rogue Traders themselves are being targeted. Police and Trading Standards have been on the streets of Sussex, checking up on doorstep sellers. The check was a resounding success and well supported by the public and honest traders. FREE ELECTRIC BLANKET TESTING
Brighton & Hove City Council and East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
One in three electric blankets tested in Brighton and Hove were found to be unsafe. Given the high number of fires blamed on faulty blankets – 5,000 a year nationally – Brighton and Hove City Council and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are offering free tests again. The fire brigade recommends that all electric blankets are tested every three years and replaced every ten years.
When buying a new blanket people are also advised to look out for the British and European standard and safety certification mark.
The council is urging everyone to check for wear and tear, dampness, scorch marks and flex damage before using their blankets this year.
The fire brigade is also offering to fit smoke alarms for free.
Last year
the council and fire brigade tested 168 electric blankets
and found that 21 per cent – more than 35 – were unsafe.
This year’s free tests will take place at a number of venues across Brighton and Hove next week – from Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 September.
