What is Trading Standards?
The Trading Standards Service is a Local Government agency which has the responsibility of protecting the interests of
consumers and legitimate businesses.
In Doncaster your service protects you by giving free advice and enforcing consumer related laws such as those affecting:-
- Age restricted sales
- Weights and measures
- Counterfeit products
- Fraudulent trading
- Unsafe goods
- Credit
- Overloading of goods vehicles
- Taxi meters
- and the list goes on.......
We are here to protect...
- YOU the consumer from being ripped off by crooks and cowboys
- YOU the trader from unfair and illegal competition
- YOU the consumer by dealing with your complaints and giving advice
- YOU the trader by advising how to comply with the laws affecting your goods and services
We do this by...
- Giving free advice to consumers and businesses
- Investigating complaints about goods you buy or services you use
- Testing products you buy from our local stores to make sure they are safe
- Testing beers and spirits to ensure that you get what you pay for
- Checking the accuracy of equipment used to weigh or measure the goods you buy e.g. shop scales and petrol pumps
- Checking that prices are not misleading
- Investigating and prosecuting trade practices which harm consumers and legitimate trade
- Testing taxi meters
The Trading Standards Service in Doncaster works in partnership with our neighbouring three authorities,
Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield, that make up the region of South Yorkshire.
