Most traders wish to stay within the law and industry codes of practise can set the tone for the way consumer expect businesses to behave.

But trading standards cannot enforce codes of practice, nor do they set the standards, and while not all associations have the resources to enforce their own codes, how trustworthy are they?

Chaired by Baroness Christine Crawley

The day that the UK accepted the opening of the channel tunnel, we effectively signed up to being in Europe, euro or no euro.  Cross-border travel and an unprecedented level of cross-border of purchasing of goods and services have followed. For economists and politicians across Europe the past two years have delivered a harsh period of debt assessment and government anxiety.

But for the consumer, concerns about governments reneging on their debts are not high on their purchasing concerns. They are more interested in seeking out the cheap deal, fast delivery,  simple and quick methods of purchasing from wherever they can find it.

Conference will discuss where UK plc fits in to trading oversees, how business can be helped, the issues around EU directives, and data collection and intelligence which can help this busy market thrive and consumers grow more confident.

11:00 - 12:15 Plenary:  ‘The priorities of the health agenda’

Chaired by Lynn Fauld-Woods

The public health agenda is wide reaching and falls to us all. Our work impacts on the mental health of communities under siege from scamming mail, door stepping energy sales, rogue traders and internet fraudsters.

We are involved in interventions to stop children eating unhealthily at school, taking up smoking and drinking under-age.  We take steps to prevent the wrong animals entering the food chain and intervene in the sale of counterfeit alcohol. We work with hospitals to make sure children’s wards are safe, that their weighing machines are correct.

With the introduction of Well-Being Boards, trading standards will need to prioritise its work and be inventive in choosing partners to increase our impact and to access vital funding for specific health projects.  We need to work on improve our shared intelligence and more closely with the voluntary sector – and we need to stay focussed and deliver valuable outcomes.
