Why Become An 'Approved Garage'?

Quite simply, being an Approved Garage means that your prospective customers will have confidence that you are a reputable garage and know that they can expect a quality service from you. It gives you a real advantage.

The Scheme will be promoted to prospective buyers and the car owning public across Fife to ensure that the public understand the benefits of buying from an Approved Garage - and look out for the Approved Garage symbol. Leaflets including Buying A Car and Car Servicing and Repairs and other scheme promotions will be distributed across Fife.

What Do Scheme Members Have To Do?

To join, you must have been in business for at least six months and have a history of fair trading.

To become an Approved Garage you must be audited by Fife Council Trading Standards. The auditor will check that you:

• Comply with the spirit and letter of the law
• Ensure that all staff are adequately trained
• Have an effective quality system in your salesroom
• Have an effective quality system in your workshop
• Have an effective customer complaints procedure

Your Invitation To Become An Approved Garage

The Trading Standards Service has produced an information leaflet entitled "Your Invitation To Become An Approved Garage" aimed at business who are thinking of joining the scheme. The leaflet gives information on the benefits of joining and the criteria a garage has to meet.

Limitations

Membership of the Scheme commits traders to high standards of fair trading which are checked by Trading Standards staff. However, Fife Council, its Councillors and officers, do not check all cars sold or all work carried out and are not liable for any problems connected with the goods or services of businesses that have received approval under this Scheme.

Membership of this Scheme is not obligatory. It should not be inferred that traders who choose not to apply for membership are less reputable than those traders who have obtained membership.
