Animal Health & Welfare

Our Animal Health team enforces legislation designed to protect livestock and farm animals.

Responsibilities include monitoring and influencing the standards of animal health and welfare on farms, in transport and at markets, to ensure that they are protected from cruelty and avoidable pain and prevent the spread of disease.

Gloucestershire County Council has published an Animal Welfare Charter setting out the council's policy on safeguarding standards of animal health and welfare.

At the same time the protection zone will also cover the whole of Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government announced today.

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)

There is a contingency plan in place should there be an outbreak of avian flu in Gloucestershire. Full details and relevant links are on the Emergency Management pages of the County Council website.

8 July 2008

The surveillance zone and remaining disease control area restrictions put in place following the outbreak of H7N7 avian influenza in Oxfordshire have been lifted.

Surveillance has shown that infection appears to have been contained to the single premises, and 30 days have now elapsed since preliminary cleansing and disinfection was completed on that premises.

Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Alick Simmons said:
“This incident has demonstrated again the potential for avian influenza to be introduced into domestic poultry in the UK. The risk of further incidents, while low, remains, and I urge poultry keepers to maintain the highest standards of biosecurity and to report suspicion of disease promptly.”

If you suspect that your birds have avian influenza, you should report it to your local Animal Health Office immediately.

If you need to report dead wild gulls, waders, ducks, geese or swans; groups of dead birds or need advice on avian flu, please contact the DEFRA Helpline 08459 33 55 77 - 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday.

For the full declaratory order, map and other guidance please go to the DEFRA link on the right.

Under the Avian Influenza (Preventive Measures) Regulations 2005 it is now a legal requirement for keepers of 50 or more commercial poultry to keep a register.

Contact us for details of the information that must be kept. We can also send you a leaflet outlining the symptoms of Avian Influenza and recommended bio security measures.
