Food Allergy

Food allergy has doubled in the last 15 years. One in seventy people in the UK suffers from a food allergy, and around ten people die every year from an allergic reaction to food.

Since November 2005 the ingredients list on the packaging of food products must indicate if they contain any of the following foods which can cause allergic reactions in some people.

However the law does not apply to food purchased from restaurants, cafés and pubs, and the majority of fatal and severe allergic reactions occur as a result of consuming foods prepared in restaurants and takeaways.

We have therefore produced an allergy advice pack for caterers which includes a warning notice and menu stickers alerting customers to the presence of allergens
