Counterfeiting and Piracy

The most common examples of counterfeiting include:

  • Copied DVDs

  • Copied CDs (including MP3 format)

  • Copied computer or console games

  • Copies of designer clothing or fashion accessories including trainers

  • Mobile telephone accessories and covers

  • Car parts

  • Medicines and drugs

  • Computer chips

Remember that counterfeit products do not undergo any safety tests and so may cause harm to the user.

Often consumers who think they are getting a good deal by purchasing a cheap copy do not consider that if the goods are faulty they are unlikely to get a refund or use any of their statutory rights as the trader will often move on very quickly or simply refuse to recognise consumer rights.

It is often alleged that counterfeiting and piracy are linked to organised crime.

Whilst some consumers see counterfeiting as a victimless crime, but as well as safety risks linked to some counterfeit products, there are also large financial implications in terms of the loss to local retailers and national revenues.

If you have purchased a counterfeit product, please use the link on the left to report it giving us as much information about the seller as possible.

If you have any problems with your purchase you are very unlikely to be able to obtain any assistance from the genuine manufacturer. Consider attempting to make contact with the trader and requesting a refund. Contact consumer direct for more information.
