Food Allergies

Food allergy has doubled in the last 15 years. One in seventy people in the UK suffers from a food allergy, and around ten people die every year from an allergic reaction to food.

 

The ingredients list on food packaging must indicate if they contain any of the following foods which can cause allergic reactions in some people.

  • Cereals containing gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, kamut or their hybridised strains)

  • Crustaceans

  • Fish

  • Eggs

  • Peanuts

  • Soybeans

  • Milk

  • Nuts (almond, hazelnut, walnut, cashew, pecan, Brazil, pistachio, macadamia and Queensland nut)

  • Celery

  • Mustard

  • Sesame seeds

  • Sulphur dioxide and sulphites at levels above 10mg/kg or 10mg/litre expressed as SO2
