Farmers' Markets

With the hot topic of reducing our carbon footprint and our growing awareness of the often long distances our food travels to get to us, the option of buying food that is produced locally is very attractive.

Farmers markets are the ideal place to pick up local food, with their emphasis on fresh, seasonal produce.

So what is a ‘Farmers’ Market’?

There is no legal definition, however there is a common theme that all farmers’ markets should share. The stalls should be run by the farmers and food producers of the local area, selling their own high-quality produce.

There are many benefits of buying at a farmers’ market:

  • Just-picked, seasonal vegetables

  • Juices made from specific varieties of fruit

  • Free-range produce

  • Organic produce

  • Local specialities

  • New recipes

  • You can meet the producers

The standards upheld at farmers’ markets are not always clear, however most organisers have a code of practice that must be adhered to. We regularly visit the market to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

In Gloucestershire you can find a farmers' market in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, Stow-on-the-Wold and Nailsworth.
