The Office of Fair Trading is a non-ministerial department of government with a range of legal responsibilities as the principal United Kingdom fair trading authority. The main work of the OFT is to:

  • identify and put right trading practices which are against the consumer's interests

  • regulate the provision of consumer credit

  • act directly on the activities of industry and commerce by investigating and remedying anti-competitive practices and abuses of market power, and bringing about market structures which encourage competitive behaviour
