Motorcyclists... are you safe?

How much protection does your protective clothing offer you?

Some items of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as helmets, are required by law. Others, like gloves, boots, jackets, trousers and body suits, are optional. All claim to offer some form of protection, but how much?

Why is it important?

Only two per cent of road users are motorcyclists, yet they account for 18% of casualties on the road. Of the 256 motorcyclists involved in collisions on Gloucestershire roads last year, 50 were either killed or seriously injured. It could be too late when you find that your 'protective' clothing does not protect you as much as it should.

Legislation involved in this area of consumer protection includes:

  • The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002

  • The General Product Safety Regulations 2005

  • The Consumer Protection Act 1987

  • The Trade Descriptions Act 1968

Items that claim to protect the wearer fall within the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations and any such claim of protection should be supported by adequate testing and manufacturing procedures.
