 Consumer Information

Safety

Many people are injured each year by faulty consumer goods.

Our safety team enforces laws aimed at preventing the supply of dangerous goods. This includes carrying out inspections of premises to make sure that goods on sale are safe, and investigating complaints from consumers about unsafe products.

As well as advising suppliers about laws that apply to their products, the team  tests consumer goods in-house or sends them to approved test houses to be examined. This is to ensure they meet required safety standards.

The team also deals with petroleum and fireworks licensing and the sale of age restricted products.

Inspections

Examples of goods we inspect include:

  • toys

  • furniture

  • electrical equipment

  • cosmetics

  • pushchairs

  • construction products

  • motor vehicle tyres.

Complaints

We investigate complaints from consumers about the safety of goods they have purchased. This may include examining or testing the product but any action taken will relate solely to the safety of the product - we do not get involved in issues relating to refunds or compensation.
