Electric blankets

Each year we offer free electric blanket safety checks to Gloucestershire residents who are over 60. These checks ensure that blankets tested comply with current safety standards and are safe to use.

Toys

We ensure that toys meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 1995. For a guide to essential safety requirements click on the link opposite.

Pedal Cycles

All new bicycles supplied must by law comply with the safety requirements detailed in British Standard BS 6102. The sale of second hand bicycles is controlled by the General Product Safety Regulations 1994 which require that only safe products are placed on the market.

Furniture

There are strict controls over the flammability of upholstered furniture. Second-hand furniture must meet the same stringent standards as new furniture on sale in the shops.

Fireworks

This service has a duty to enforce legislation controlling the sale and safety of fireworks. We also register retailers who store and sell fireworks.

Petrol

A petroleum licence is required where fuel is kept in a storage tank and is delivered via a dispenser into a motor vehicle, boat, or aeroplane. We ensure licensed sites comply with licensing conditions, we approve redevelopments and site alterations, and we give guidance and advice.

Buy Wise Be Safe

A video & education package for parents produced by SWERCOTS covering purchase & safe use of essential equipment for babies and toddlers, such as highchairs, safety gates, pushchairs, cots and car seats.

Motorcycle personal protective equipment

We carry out inspections and check that items of personal protective equipment that claim to protect the wearer meet the requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations.

Product risk assessment and product recall

We have agreed with partner authorities a protocol for a consistent approach to new product recall powers and responsibilities provided under the new General Product Safety Directive. See safety warnings for products that have been recalled.
