Fireworks

In a four week period October to November 2004 there were 1160 recorded injuries as a result of fireworks.

Of those 368 injuries were to those under 13 years of age, and 197 were to people between the ages of 13 and 17.

In cases where the type of firework was known 23% of injuries were caused by sparklers.

Although for this period there were no reported deaths, 70 people were detained in hospital for at least one night.

Of the incidents reported 313 were as a result of a casual incident in the street or other public place.

Around bonfire night fireworks are associated with nuisance crime committed by youths. Our picture shows a 'firework battle' between rival gangs of youths in the West Country.
