Analytical Report - Oat based breakfast cereals

Introduction

Previous sampling of breakfast cereals has looked at nutrition content but cereals are known to be potentially contaminated with mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are produced on all kinds of grain, but some mycotoxins are more commonly found on each type. T-2 and HT-2 toxins are found mainly on oats, whereas fumonisins are found mainly on maize. These mycotoxins can be present on agricultural crops as a result of a fungus (Fusarium). The fungus can produce the mycotoxins when it grows which then contaminate the cereal. Contamination can occur in the field or as a result of poor storage. The resulting mycotoxin components are very toxic and have been known to be carcinogenic. As a result there are maximum levels set for the mycotoxins in food products and ingredients.

Samples of oats and breakfast cereals containing oats or maize and were therefore submitted for testing for these mycotoxins.

Summary of results

Very few mycotoxins were found in the products. ZON was found in 2 products at a very low level, DON was found in only one product below the maximum permitted limit and no fumonisins B1, B2 or T-2 or HT-2 toxins were found.

The food industry, farmers, grain stores, mills and manufacturers all take steps to ensure cereals are harvested and stored correctly. Further mycotoxin tests are conducted before processing cereals. The results indicate that this activity has ensured that mycotoxin levels are safe for consumers. Given that some presence of mycotoxins was detected, continued vigilance is required.

There were four products with labelling errors. Two stated that they contained “No added sugar”. Whilst true, there should have been a statement on each “Contains naturally occurring sugars”, in this case from the fruit. One sample of oats had no English on the label and another carried a non-specific claim of “healthy choice”. However, this may only be made if accompanied by a specific permitted health claim.
