Sponsoring the Young Consumers of the Year Competion

Sponsoring the competition - what's in it for your business?

A marketing opportunity

Knock-out heats for the Young Consumers of the Year Competition take the form of a paper quiz, to find the top six teams to compete in the Kent Final held at County Hall, Maidstone. Each heat ends with a photocall and prize-giving, and is covered by our Press Office to gain maximum publicity. Pat Marsh BBC Radio Kent presenter is our Question Master and the final is run along the lines of ‘University Challenge’.

The sponsors for the Kent Final provide a buffet lunch for teams and invited guests, giving everyone the opportunity to look around exhibitions which Trading Standards and the sponsors display for the day. This provides the maximum marketing opportunity to inform both the teams and spectators about your business.

Kent final 2010

We are delighted that The Co-operative Membership has agreed to sponsor the Kent final of the Young Consumers of the Year Competition which takes place on 26 February 2010 at Sessions House, County Hall, Maidstone.

Media interest

Media interest in the event is usually high. The winning team represents Kent at the Regional Finals of the competition held in the Spring. The winners then join teams from across the country in the National Final held during the Trading Standards Institute’s Annual Conference in June. Teams from all over the United Kingdom take part in this competition to win £1,000 for their school and the title of ‘Young Consumers of the Year’.

The benefits of sponsorship

This national competition promotes businesses on a national platform along with key industry players, including BERR (Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform - formerly DTI) and OFT.

The benefits of equipping young people with consumer skills are far reaching. Consumer education is about living. It promotes self-awareness and enables people to make proper use of goods and services. It plays a vital part in helping to develop the ability to evaluate, analyse and compare. The competition helps to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes, which can promote confidence in helping the youngsters of today be wiser and smarter consumers and become the business people of tomorrow. This benefits not just the individual but also other key players within the economy.

Employers gain a more skilled workforce - people who can organise time and resources, seek and manipulate data, make reasoned judgements and communicate effectively, adding value to their organisations. Retailers gain staff who are aware of customers’ and their own rights and responsibilities as well as an appreciation of customer care issues. Industry benefits from informed demand which helps to raise standards and increase competitiveness, with fewer complaints and lower costs.
