Consumer Challenge Quiz

What is it?

The Consumer Challenge quiz is a fun, national competition for children at Special Schools, now in its tenth year. It has received an award from the European Commission for the most original idea for a consumer campaign.

Local schools are invited to take part in the Kent Consumer Challenge Quiz, with the winning team going on to represent Kent at the national final which is held at the Trading Standards national conference.

The competition is designed to help students with moderate learning difficulties become more aware of their role as citizens.  Questions cover consumer issues such as signs and symbols, safety, shoppers' rights and legal matters.

Representing Kent in the national final

The Kent quiz takes place in November each year. The winning team goes on to represent Kent at the national final held during the annual Trading Standards Institute's National Conference in June.

The current Kent champions

The Kent quiz took place at Wyvern school, Ashford in November 2007.   The teams, each with four students, were from Bower Grove School Maidstone, Broomhill Bank School Tunbridge Wells, The Foreland School Broadstairs, Highview School Folkestone, Oakley School Tunbridge Wells and The Wyvern School Ashford.   Although the competition was very close, Broomhill Bank School won with a score of 30, just ahead of  the Foreland School with 27 points. Bower Grove School scored 26 points with Highview School, Oakley School and the Wyvern School all scoring 25 points.

After winning their heat they gained a place in the Grand Finale where they won 3rd place. Amongst many other prizes they won a digital camera each.

More than 200 schools from around the country originally entered the 2008 Consumer Challenge Quiz.
