Food & Agriculture

There are more than 11,000 food premises in Kent, and every year we test thousands of food samples. We check that permitted additives are declared and present only in permitted quantities and that labelling information is accurate. In addition, we have to ensure that legal minimum standards (for example the amount of meat in sausages, burgers and pies) are complied with, and that illegal substitution does not occur. We also check that food is not sold after its "use-by" date.

Food hygiene issues (for example, food poisoning, foreign bodies in food or dirty premises) are dealt with by Environmental Health Officers, based in District/Borough Councils.

Many similar requirements are required by the Agriculture Act, in respect of commercial fertilizers and animal feeds used by farmers. Samples are taken regularly from local producers and suppliers.

Our aims and objectives in relation to our food and agriculture work are set out in our Food Service Plan which forms part of our Business Plan.
