TSI Local Heroes Awards
This is a nationally recognised award scheme administered by the Trading Standards Institute to celebrate outstanding local contributions to consumer protection and the protection of individuals.
Nominations can be submitted by individuals or organisations. This is not an annual award and nominations can be submitted at any time.
Nominations will be considered by a panel of senior officers from TSI together with invited partners and in consultation with the local Head of Trading Standards. If successful, the award will be passed to the Local Head of Trading Standards to be dealt with as he/she feels most appropriate to the local circumstances. The TSI press office will liaise with local and other relevant partners to maximise media coverage.
The nomination form can be found at the at the foot of this page
Who / what can be nominated?
Individuals or groups can be nominated. The emphasis is on local contributions and, in particular, celebrating the actions of individuals and community groups.
What sort of things can be put forward for an award?
The individual or group must have done something extra – above and beyond what normally would be expected of their role.
The award is to recognise special actions or innovation so it would be wrong to try and confine applications to a definitive list of themes.
Trading standards services are responsible for protecting individuals from rogue traders and enhancing levels of consumer protection whether by exposing the ‘crooks’ or improving consumer awareness and self-help.
The following examples illustrate the purpose of the award but they are not intended to be anything other than examples:
- A bank employee recognises an unusual withdrawal by an older customer, which, after discussion with the customer, is identified as being to pay a rogue doorstep criminal for a roof repair. As a result the authority (Trading Standards / Police) are contacted and the customer protected.
- A community group introduces a scheme to raise awareness of community safety / trading standards issues, possibly in conjunction with the local trading standards service or other partner / community groups.
- A witness (or witnesses) played a major role in a difficult and important investigation.
- A local journalist who has championed the cause of consumers with enthusiasm and commitment (nb see also the TSI media awards scheme, check news section of site for more information).
- A group of youngsters who together with the local Trading Standards Service (and perhaps other partners) have made a major contribution to under-age sales enforcement/advice programmes.
- An individual or group who has campaigned (successfully or otherwise) for a local change/improvement.
- A local community leader (eg Councillor, Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator) who has made a major contribution to the local area in relation to consumer protection and related methods.
How to submit a nomination
Nominating someone for this award is straightforward and there is no charge. Please complete the attached pro-forma. The process should take no longer than six weeks from receiving a nomination to a final decision.
It would be helpful if the local Head of Trading Standards could be advised when submitting nominations and even better, if he or she supports it. However, this is not essential.
The nominee(s) does not need to know that they have been nominated. Until otherwise agreed, all contact will be through the person submitting the nomination.
