Doorstep Sellers and Cold Calling
During 2005 we launched our Doorstep Sellers initiative. We also introduced a sticker for local residents to put on their front doors which aims to reduce unwanted callers (see example to the right). The campaign is supported by Avon & Somerset Constabulary. If you are a North Somerset resident and would like a front door sticker, they are avaialable free of charge from local libraries and from Somerset House, Weston super Mare. ____________________________________________________________
No Uninvited Doorstep SellersIn May 2007 North Somerset celebrated its' first 'No Uninvited Doorstep Sellers' zone in Weston super Mare. See our press release If you would like information on how your neighbourhood can set up such a zone please contact us ____________________________________________________________ Unfortunately when the doorbell rings not all callers are who they say they are. It is all too common for vulnerable members of the community, typically older people, to be deceived, even intimidated and threatened, by callers pretending to be genuine contractors. These 'cowboy' traders often fleece people for extortionate amounts of money for work that is either shoddy or unnecessary in the first place. The Trading Standards Institute (TSI) has launched a leaflet to explain what a No Cold Calling Zone (NCCZ) is, how they work and, importantly, how to go about setting one up (See below). Further help and assistance is also available from this service.
