The primary role of an Internal Assessor (IA) is to assess candidates' performance in a range of tasks and to ensure the evidence for the competence of knowledge based skills submitted by the candidate meets the requirements of the assessment criteria.
As an assessor you need to be occupationally competent in the subjects areas that you will be assessing.
As an assessor you are responsible for:

- agreeing an assessment plan with your candidate
- fully briefing candidates on the assessment process
- following assessment guidelines provided
- observing candidates' performance in the workplace or conducting other forms of assessment
- recording all questions used and answers given for the purposes of meeting the evidence requirements
- judging the evidence and making assessment decisions against the assessment criteria for competency and demonstration of knowledge requirements
- providing candidates with prompt, accurate and constructive feedback
maintaining records of candidates' achievements - confirming your candidates have demonstrated competence/knowledge and completing the required documentation
agreeing new assessment plans with your candidates where further evidence is required - making yourself available for discussion with the Internal and/or External Verifier
- ensuring that assessment is carried out within equality of opportunity best practice
- providing feedback to the awarding body regarding award structure, content and the assessment process
The assessment process will be through:
- observation of candidate performance
- questioning candidates
- examination of evidence
- questioning of others involved in the assessment eg witnesses
Portfolios should be assessed by all those involved on an ongoing process, task by task. Portfolios should not be end loaded, that is given to the Assessor or Internal Verifier only when it is completed.
Internal assessors need to have attended a TSI Assessor and Verifier training course to understand expectations, requirements of the role and the portfolios and associated paperwork.
All assessment documentation can be found in the qualification resource centre.
