The following information
will be of use to businesses and young people.
A business supplying
any of the products listed below to someone who is below the legal age
is a criminal offence which can lead to you, or a member of your
staff, being prosecuted.
Asking to see a
proof of age card is essential to help you to avoid breaking the law.
It also shows that you are taking a responsible attitude towards under
age sales.
Please note - that
the age for buying knives and cigarettes changed to 18, on 1/10/07

To get the full
protection from proof of age cards retailers must always:
| COMPARE |
| The
photograph on the card with the person presenting it. If in doubt
check the back of the card for the holder's name, ask them to spell
it and check their spelling. Ask them to sign their name and compare
signature. Still unsure - don't sell. |

CHECK |
| The
age boxes. If the holder is not old enough to buy or if the card
appears to have been altered - don't sell. |

| DISPLAY |
| Display
a window sticker, point of sale poster and other proof of age scheme
material, showing that you support the proof of age schemes. |

| TRAIN |
| Your
staff to follow these instructions so they know what to do if you're
not there. |
| |
| INFORM |
| Trading
Standards if you think a card is being misused. Make a note of the
card's details and retain it. If you suspect misuse - don't sell. |
