Crucial Crew

-----

Crucial Crew child safety events have been running for several years in Shropshire, and are aimed at Year 6 children (aged 10-11), an age where they are becoming more independent and need to know how to behave in an emergency or risk situation. Presenter discusses the hazards of cigarettes at Crucial Crew South

The Crucial Crew events in Shropshire are run by management committee partnerships involving local and national businesses, departments of the County and District Councils, as well as the Police and Fire Authorities, the NFU, Railtrack and others.

These partners, together with other agencies, provide staff and resources for one or more interactive scenarios during a week or fortnight's event, attended by local children - the actual CRUCIAL CREW!

After a day at Crucial Crew, children should be:

* More aware of personal safety
* Able to deal effectively with risk situations
* Able to make a contribution to crime prevention
* Able to avoid being a victim of crime
* Aware of the role emergency services play

Children making selection from "Village Shop" - Crucial Crew North The Trading Standards Service has once again taken part in two Crucial Crew events, held at Nesscliffe for Shrewsbury and Oswestry children, and at Cleobury North for schools in the South Shropshire and Bridgnorth areas.

This year the scenario took the theme of 'Illegal Shopping' with a village shop counter for children to visit and pick out eleven goods which cannot legally be sold to young people.

Children making selection from "Village Shop" - Crucial Crew SouthObvious items such as cigarettes, alcohol and lottery tickets were quickly snapped up but children needed to look and think much harder about items like party poppers, cigarette papers, airgun pellets, and toilet cleaner!

After an opportunity to select their 'shopping', the children and the Trading Standards presenters discussed the hazards associated with each item and the children offered their opinions about why there needs to be an age limit on sale of potentially dangerous goods.

To take the test yourself and see how well you would have scored.
