Restrictions
Access to Shrewsbury Town Centre and some Shrewsbury
neighbourhoods are restricted by Weight Restriction Orders, some effective
all day and night, some between 11.00pm and 7.00am only. Additionally
5 bridges in the town are weight restricted.
We have provided
a map to show those roads and bridges that are restricted.

The road restrictions
apply to vehicles in excess of 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, i.e
the maximum weight the heavy commercial vehicle can legally carry -
not the actual loaded weight.
There are a limited
number of general exemptions to causing or permitting any heavy commercial
vehicle to proceed in the roads covered by the Orders as follows
- If directed
or with the permission of a police constable / traffic warden
- Used for the
conveyance of persons goods or merchandise to or from any premises
situated on or adjacent to the roads referred to in the Orders (not
applicable to night- time restrictions)
- Public service
vehicles, fire appliances ambulances or police vehicles
- Used for the
collection of refuse from premises to which access can be obtained
only from the roads detailed in the Orders
- Used for the
provision or maintenance of traffic signs or street lights
- Use in connection
with building operations or demolitions, the removal of obstructions
to traffic, the maintenance improvement or reconstruction of roads
or the laying erection alteration or repair of sewers pipes or apparatus
for the supply of water gas or electricity or defined telecommunication
apparatus, in or on land or premises on which access can be obtained
only from the roads detailed in the Orders.
Other limited specific
exemptions may apply in road networks, but it is not acceptable or legal
to pass through one restriction to gain access to another.
The individual ‘bridge’
restrictions relate to the actual loaded weight of any heavy commercial
vehicle.
Additional detail covering other principal weight restrictions about
the County and the adoption of GIS standards is under development.
