About Us

Introduction to South Tyneside Trading Standards

The service was established in 1986 combined with the Environmental Health service but it is now combined with the other regulatory services of Planning and Building Control within the new Neighbourhood Services Directorate.

Trading Standards' mission is:-

"To promote a fair and safe trading environment for the public and business community in South Tyneside ".

We are committed to provide an accessible front line public service putting our customers first and designed to serve the needs of the local community.

Using a programme of planned actions which are linked to the Council's priorities our service is designed to deliver :

Informed Successful Businesses

Informed Confident Consumers

A Fair and Safe Trading Environment

An Efficient, Effective and Improving Service

Our service objectives are therefore:

To ensure that consumers and businesses within South Tyneside are protected against fraud, unfair trading practices and unsafe goods or services

To provide advice, assistance and support to the business community of South Tyneside including verification of equipment and other calibration services in partnership with the other Tyne & Wear Local Authorities

To empower and enable consumers within the Borough to exercise their legal civil rights to resolve disputes concerning the sale or supply of goods/services. We also mediate between consumers and traders.

To listen to the needs of the community and respond to their demands for alternative and/or improved services

To deliver this service Trading Standards has a establishment of 13 staff who are deployed into two operational teams:

An enforcement team each covering the Borough which handle all complaints, enquiries and service requests. They also carry out planned inspections, sampling, surveys and special projects.

A consumer advice team which handle all complaints, enquiries and services requests from residents in relation to civil law matters and provide a range of consumer education initiatives.
