Operational Activity

The work of the section is categorised by four key areas of activity, namely Fair Trading, Safety, Metrology and Consumer Advice & Education

How We Do It
Visits are made to trade premises including manufacturers, importers and retailers on a regular basis. What you can expect when one of our officers visits you.

During the course of these visits, which are generally unannounced, the opportunity is taken to check on the wide range of consumer protection/trading standards legislation.

We ensure that weighing and measuring equipment is accurate, prices are correctly displayed, goods are correctly marked and goods and services are accurately described. We also test goods and services for quality, quantity and safety.

We are also committed to helping businesses based in South Tyneside understand and comply with the law and are keen supporters of the home authority principle. An extensive range of guidance leaflets is available to traders free of charge.

Visits are also made as a result of information received via our consumer advice service. This is important in helping to identify problem areas of trade, trends or new malpractices as they develop.

If you require specific advice on any of these issues, you can contact us directly for free advice or to give us information.
