What we do

Safety

We carry out a wide range activities to protect the public from unsafe consumer goods, enforcing an extensive range of product safety legislation. Traders may be prosecuted where serious breaches are found. Examples of goods regulated include:

age restricted goods eg alcohol, tobacco, fireworks

toys

prams and push-chairs

gas and electrical appliances

upholstered furniture
cosmetics

roadworthiness of cars

We ensure compliance with this legislation in various ways, namely:

advising local businesses

inspecting goods on sale

sampling and testing goods to check they are safe

investigating complaints about unsafe products

We also provide advice to the public on how to buy safe goods, what to avoid, what to look out for, and warning of the potential dangers of buying shoddy second hand goods. We have an extensive range of guidance leaflets available free of charge.
