Starting a new business?

Trading standards want to help new businesses succeed in the Borough. By working together we can assist you to get it right first time, reduce compliance costs and help to ensure that your business is trading on the right side of the law. Advice can be given over the telephone, by letter, e-mail or by a personal visit to your premises. This service is free of charge.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has also produced a useful guide entitled Running a Business (pdf format).

Business Link website also provides a wealth of reference material.

We may also be able to provide a staff training package at reasonable cost, relating to the legislation for which we are responsible.

For businesses who will also trade outside of South Tyneside we are keen to work with you in accordance with the home authority principle.

Customer care is also very important for any business especially new businesses trying to get established.

The Trading Standards Institute TSI Fair Trading Award is a qualification for today’s trading environment. It aims to develop key staff in the vital area of trading law. By training for the Award, all staff who deal with customers can achieve a standard which has the backing of the Trading Standards profession. This means that they can become more competent in the management of their businesses and they can use the qualification as part of their personal development process.
