Calibration and Testing Services
South Tyneside Council in partnership with the other
Tyne & Wear Councils of Gateshead, Newcastle, North
Tyneside and Sunderland have jointly funded a purpose
built calibration and testing facility.
This 'Metrology Laboratory', located in Gateshead,
is a statutory weights and measures facility used by
the partner Trading Standards Authorities to calibrate
their standards and other testing equipment. It also
provides facilities for those authorities to test consumer
products for safety, in particular toys for which it
has achieved national accreditation.
In addition to its statutory and regulatory duties
the laboratory provides a range of services that are
available to businesses on a commercial basis.
It is accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation
Service) for mass calibration. UKAS certification means
that the reference standards used in calibration are
traceable to national standards. A strict quality system
with approved procedures and environmental controls
are in place. Calibration certificates therefore meet
the requirements for traceability given in BS EN ISO
9001:2000 and are acceptable to assessors of quality
assurance systems.
