Business

Here at Trading Standards we understand that sometimes traders find the law complicated and time-consuming to follow, and that the great majority of South Tyneside businesses wish to trade lawfully, fairly and respect their customers' rights.

We believe that it is much better for a business to 'get things right first time' than try to correct them after the event and that the best way to carry out our enforcement responsibilities is to work closely with the business community to help them understand the law and how they should comply.

This balanced approach towards law enforcement, including promotion of the home authority principle which is supported by local authorities throughout the U.K. This principle requires that we place special emphasis on the legality of goods and services originating in South Tyneside and helping those businesses meet their legal obligations without unnecessary expense.

It is important to us that we work at developing good relationships with the firms based in South Tyneside, and we will provide free advice and assistance on any aspect of the legislation we enforce. We will negotiate a fee if you request us to provide staff training.

In order to do that effectively, the Council recognises the importance of investing in the training and professional skills of our staff to ensure that the advice given to businesses in the area is as good as we can make it.

We will also apply the principles of good enforcement practice set out in a concordat agreed between local and central government. Our enforcement policy reflects these principles and has been agreed by elected members. This policy should ensure that all decisions on enforcement action are taken fairly and consistently.
