Doorstep Selling

Coping with Doorstep Sellers
It is often difficult for you to check immediately if repairs are really needed and they hope to panic you into letting them do the work.

Check with neighbours or friends to see if anyone has had work done by these people and whether they are happy with the quality of the work done.

Don't be afraid to say no and remember you do not have to give reasons. A crafty salesman will find an answer to every reason you give.

Follow our checklist :

Make sure the business is genuine

Make sure you have all their details - address, phone number (not just a mobile) and vehicle registration

Make sure you know exactly what you are agreeing to have done and that the trader knows exactly what you want

Obtain written descriptions of the work to be done and quotes for the price

Find out how long the work will take

Know how and how much you are going to pay

Never sign any blank or partly filled in documents

Never pay cash in advance - it is better if you can to pay by cheque, or to give you more protection pay on credit when spending more than £100

Make sure the price is inclusive and extras will not be added to the final bill

Never in any circumstances allow sales people to take you to your bank or building society to draw out cash

Don’t pay the full amount for the job until you are satisfied with the work carried out

Always make sure you get a proper receipt including the trader's details and the work carried out

Be careful about generous warranty claims - they are only as good as the company backing them
