Doorstep Selling

Remember the Do's and Don'ts
If a doorstep seller knocks at your door follow the golden rules :

Do

Ask to see the caller's identification and examine it carefully

Do

Phone their office to check they are who they say they are

Do

Challenge anyone looking over your property - did you give permission?

Do

Check that the is work necessary - get a second opinion

Do

Shop around for the best deal - obtain three quotes

Do

Ask the caller to leave you with the information to study at your leisure

Do

Remember you should be given a right to cancel a contract after 'cold calling'

Do

Get an address and phone number (not just a mobile) in case you need to contact the trader again

Do

Make a note of the registration number of the trader's vehicle

Do

Try to check the quality of their work - ask for references and check them

Don't

Believe all callers are genuine

Don't

Believe the 'scare stories' a salesman may tell you - they are rarely true

Don't

Believe genuine companies have 'materials left over' or cancelled orders - they don't

Don't

Believe special deals 'today only' - it's high pressure selling

Don't

Be persuaded to pay cash upfront

Don't

Sign anything or pay for anything until you are sure about it

Don't

Part with your money until work is completed to your satisfaction

Don't

Be afraid to ask the sales person to leave - if they refuse call the police

NB If you are concerned about a doorstep seller in your area pass the information to us or the police.
