Our top ten shopping tips

1

Pick a shop that operates a price promise

If you do later see the goods cheaper elsewhere you can ask for the difference back, small print permitting! Remember to also check internet prices which may provide deal.

2

Pick interest free credit

It’s no use shopping around to find the best price if you end up paying a lot in interest. Check the total cost of the deal and be careful not to miss the last date for payment or you may end up paying interest that could almost be as much as the goods themselves.

3

Use your credit card

If the goods you have bought cost over £100 and prove to be faulty or don’t arrive you have the same rights against the credit card company as you have against the shop. This is especially useful if the shop goes bust.

4

Check the shop’s refund policy before you buy

Some store will refund you money if you change your mind but others will not. Remember unless the goods are faulty there is no legal obligation on a shop to do anything if you change your mind.

5

Don’t pay for extended warranties

Generally we consider extended warranties to be poor value for money. Consider the deal overall, it usually to buy from shops that include longer warranties as part of the deal.

6

Always check the small print

Always read what you are asked to sign, do not be put off or rushed. You may be signing up to extra costs or something you do not want.

7

Be wary of offers that look too good to be true

If an offer you get through the post, at a one-day sale or auction looks too good to be true it generally is!

8

Do your homework

Check the “Which” magazines or Good Housekeeping’s “Buy the Best” before you decide which brand to buy. They thoroughly test a wide range of goods. For house maintenance check out our safetrader scheme.

9

Keep your receipt

It’s not difficult and it saves a lot of hassle if you have to return faulty goods.

10

Haggle

Even big high street retailer may sometimes lower the price or give additional items free of charge.
