Extra rights for consumers on faulty goods

The Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002 came into force on 31 March 2003. The Regulations are as a result an EC Directive on the sale of consumer goods and associated guarantees.

Although the impact on existing UK legislation is relatively modest there are some useful changes for consumers and the Directive itself sets a minimum baseline for consumers' rights across Member States.

Additional benefits for UK Consumers include :

Entitled to reasonable redress wherever they buy goods in the European Union

A specific right in the UK to a repair or replacement if goods are faulty

If goods develop a fault within the first six months and the retailer wishes to dispute a claim for a repair or replacement, the retailer will be required to provide proof that the fault was not present when the goods were sold.
